Barrier Removal in Historic Buildings

ADA Fact: The ADA requires barrier removal in historic buildings, if it is “readily achievable”.

Barrier removal would not be considered “readily achievable” in the event it would threaten or destroy the historic significance of a building or facility that is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under the National Historic Preservation Act, or is designated as historic under State or local law.

Alterations to a qualified historic building or facility must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) unless compliance would threaten or destroy the historic significance of the building or facility. In such a case, alternative requirements may be used.
