Wheelchair Access is the Law

wheelchair access

Once again, you had to wheel your chair right up to the bathroom stall door and painstakingly transfer yourself from your chair to that oh-so-questionable toilet. You weren’t even able to reach over to wipe the seat down before you plopped yourself down on it.

Oh, well. What’s a person to do?

A good start is to contact us. Here at Access Advocates we spend our days helping people just like you. Those who have had barriers thrown up in front of them, but refuse to allow those barriers to stand.

In addition to wheelchair access, we help people who have encountered access problems with ramps, doors, elevators and aisles that don’t comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The overall goal of the ADA is to create and retrofit buildings so that their design does not limit access to people with disabilities. This includes Braille and audio announcements in elevators so that our vision and hearing limited neighbors can operate the elevator without assistance. It specifies the width, slope and other factors of ramps so that people using wheelchairs and walkers can navigate them safely. It also spells out access requirements in bathrooms, so that you don’t have to leave your chair outside the stall.

If you have run into a problem with wheelchair access and want to do something about it, please contact us. We will talk to you to learn your story and then work with the business owner to help them bring their building into compliance with the ADA. After the work is completed, we will audit the facility again to confirm satisfactory completion. This is all at no cost to you.

Just think, with a little investment of your time, you can improve the world for you and for all your friends and neighbors. Please be in touch.
