Until a recent article was published by an ADA expert it never occurred to many people that “Getting gas is an issue for (people with) disabilities” according to a statement made by J.R. Harding on Tallahassee.com. If you stop for just a minute and think about any daily routine, then imagine going through all those motions in a wheelchair, it becomes much more obvious how inaccessible many things in our society really can be. Thankfully there are more advocates working on behalf of those who struggle with disabilities each day to make certain government regulations are being followed.
Another excellent way that more awareness is being raised about the barriers that need to be identified and eradicated is through public awareness that seems to be embraced on television as is demonstrated by the networks fall line-ups. Recently posted in the “disability scoop” – a source for developmental disability news, “Television appears to be embracing disability more widely with network executives announcing this week a handful of new shows that prominently feature characters with special needs.” Even the old TV series “Ironside” is making a comeback in the fall, complete with the detective in a wheelchair. Raymond Burr did an excellent job playing this role in the past, which makes us anxious to see how the new Detective Ironside will fare.
But back to the real world, there are still many barriers to access for people with disabilities that are being targeted by advocates every day. The experts are striving to identify these types of barriers and welcome the contributions of individuals who experience these obstacles in their everyday lives.
