If you have a disability, you should be able to safely enter and exit any publicly accessible building that you want. When you find a lack of building compliance, you need to make sure that people are aware of the Americans with Disabilities Act and ADA building requirements.
What is ADA building compliance?
ADA building compliance means that all public and commercial facilities should be safe to use by any and all Americans with a disability. It is important to note that this does not include religious and private clubs, according to the law.
Any other public area that you use, however, ranging from a government facility to the local grocery store, should be in compliance with the ADA. A wheelchair ramp should be present in order to allow anyone the ability to properly enter and exit a building, and any multi-story building should have an elevator.
What happens if you encounter a building that is not compliant?
When you have a disability, you should understand your rights as they relate to ADA building compliance. Too often, laws are complicated or simply ignored; it’s your right as a person with a disability to be able to gain safe access into any public building. If you find that your bank, grocery store, or federal building does not allow you easily and safely enter, you need to let the professionals at Access Advocates know.
ADA building compliance is not a complicated matter and all businesses should strive to allow all people, regardless of physical ability, to safely enter, move around, and exit a building without difficulty. But in reality, that’s not always the case. To learn more about ADA building compliance, how it impacts you, and what you can do when a building is not compliant with the ADA, please contact us.
