Practicing Tolerance
Many schools and universities today educate their students about the importance of tolerance. Very young children are taught not to discriminate against individuals who have disabilities, for instance. Many modern universities place a great deal of emphasis on the importance of being inclusive.
As such, when schools and universities do not provide adequate wheelchair access, it’s especially unfortunate. Educators should certainly be well aware of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and they should know that their institutions are required to meet certain standards when it comes to wheelchair access.
Reliability
Young students will attend schools most days of the week. If wheelchair access for the students who need it is not available, they will face the same set of challenges nearly every day. There won’t always be an adult to help them, and this should not be the case.
Students who are attending college may be in an even worse situation. University class schedules vary. Students will usually have classes in many different buildings throughout the college campus. If wheelchair access is a problem all throughout a given college campus, many students will run into problems several times a day.
Wide Range of Individuals
Schools also employ a lot of people. Plenty of teachers, professors, administrators, and other people employed by the school might need wheelchair access as well. Many of the same sets of accessibility standards that will help wheelchair users will also help many other people with disabilities. Schools and universities will help many students at once when they meet certain standards for wheelchair access, and they will harm a lot of students at once when they fail to do so. Individuals with disabilities who have experienced harm like this should know that this is not a situation that they have to accept.
